Course Description:

EKG (CET) Course: 30 Hours

Acquiring a deeper understanding of the cardiovascular system and how it functions. students practice basic electrocardiograph patient care TECHNIQUES, applying legal and ETHICAL responsibilities. students learn the use of medical instrumentation, electrocardiogram theory, identification of and response to medical problems, recognition of cardiac rhythm and response to emergency finding.

Job Description:

An EKG Technician, or a Cardiovascular Technician, is an integral part of the management of patients with heart disease. EKG technicians use electrodes and other specialized electronic equipment to obtain heart readings known as electrocardiography (EKG). They are able to trace and record electrical impulses transmitted by the patient's heart. The recorded data is then reviewed by a physician to evaluate the condition of the patient's heart. The doctor's diagnosis of heart disease is based upon the interpretation of EKG tracings. EKG's are also performed before and after operations, during physicals, for patients with a history of heart disease, when patients are experiencing chest pains and other instances when a physician deems it necessary.

An EKG Technician adheres electrodes to the patient's chest, arms and legs. An EKG machine is used to trace and record electrical impulses transmitted by the patient's heart. After data is collected, the EKG Technician prints an EKG for evaluation by the physician. An EKG Technician with advanced training may also perform Holter monitoring or stress testing.

Phlebotomy (CPT) Course: 90 Hours

Phlebotomy is the HIGHLY skilled technique of collecting or drawing blood for SAMPLING, which is tested in a laboratory. Students will learn basic practices of obtaining blood from veins and CAPILLARIES, methods if venipuncture and dermal puncture, specimen collecting, use of vacutainers, syringes, butterflies and lancets, record keeping and lab reports, osha safety standards and more.

Clinical’s: Students perform clinical sticks while in class.

Job Description:

A Phlebotomy Technician (Phlebotomist) is an integral member of any health care team. The primary function of the Phlebotomy Tech is to collect blood samples from patients via venipuncture or micro-techniques. The Phlebotomy Tech facilitates the collection and transportation of laboratory specimens and is often the patient’s only contact with the medical lab.  A Phlebotomy Technician also draws blood for transfusions, donations and research.

Phlebotomy Technicians must be responsible and enjoy a challenge. They must also be accurate, work well under pressure and communicate effectively. They are required to practice discretion and confidentiality at all times. To meet their patients’ needs, they must have strong interpersonal skills and be able to stay calm in stressful situations.
